One day over thirty years ago I found an old hammer and started pounding a metal coat hanger on a large flat rock behind the apartment where I was living. There was something primal and captivating about transforming this piece of metal, perhaps striking a cord in me similar to what ancient metalsmiths might have felt as they created the pieces we now see in museums. From that point on I collected tools and technical information from wherever and however I could. I was hooked.

It was 1980 and I was about to begin a career in public health as a researcher for OSHA, the federal agency that oversees health and safety for workers. I had trained as an intern with the agency during college, but following graduation my career direction took a sharp turn, as all new hiring at OSHA was halted, and the era of government down-sizing began.

In 1970, with a minimal repertoire of design and technical skills, I began producing small editions of jewelry designs from my workshop, selling them at craft shows and galleries. In 1980 I established a public studio space and changed my focus to concentrate on one-of-a-kind and custom-made jewelry. Today, the thrill continues of transforming gold, silver or platinum into beautiful and meaningful personal artifacts. Approaching a new design project is always a challenge of discovery, a blending of materials, aesthetics and the human element.
During a year of transition, I worked part time in my brother Neal’s studio, selling jewelry and eventually taking over the management of the business. I became fascinated by gemstones, diamonds mostly, and began to develop the knowledge, skills and eye for evaluating fine gems. Today, in addition to managing the business and selecting collections of designer jewelry for the showroom, I help clients choose the right gems and the right piece of jewelry for those special occasions.
